Hello all. Sometimes as I am working, my system tray and toolbar disappear without warning. Very rarely it comes back on its own, usually after I shut down a program or two. I usually have to shut down and reboot, sometimes by turning the power on and off at the surge protector/battery backup (which doesn't really work correctly, because our electrical outlets are not three-pronged).
I am running on a Windows XP Home operating system, with Zone Alarm as a firewall (from the new Internet Security Suite), Spysweeper as a spyware etc remover, and Trend Micro for antivirus. Those three run continuously. I have Eudora for email and IE and Opera 9 for browsers. Eudora is usually always running and one, if not both, of the browsers are often going as well. Microsoft Word is usually going, and Outlook may be up as well. I always have XNote Stopwatch running. I haven't kept track of what was running each time it happens. This last time, I had Eudora, Opera, and XNote, all of which had been running for a while. I brought up Microsoft Office Document Scanning and then Microsoft Word before the tray and toolbar disappeared. After I rebooted, having to turn the power off at the surge protector/battery backup, I used them all again at the same time without the disappearance. I wonder if because the computer is on for most of the time I am awake, if this is a memory problem. I know Windows is famous for a leaky memory as time goes on. I have been using Opera quite a bit, cleaning out the sessions. I am thinking about returning to a version of Opera 8, because 9 is taking forever to load pages, as in minutes and hours and they still are not loaded. That likely doesn't have anything to do with the taskbar and system tray disappearing, but it might ring a bell somewhere. Earthlink has forced a change in access numbers, and I believe that is part of the slowness, because after the switch, it often takes a long time between incoming information. My main priority right now is to solve the occasionally disappearing systems tray and toolbar. That concerns me the most, especially when the computer then will sometimes not shut down properly. That's a sign of a virus, I have been told. Something I definitely don't need, especially after having the computer in the shop because of one for four days at the end of last month! Any ideas and/or suggestions will really be appreciated. Thanks Theresa > Gentlemen, I believe we have much to discuss.
