Actually you can run legacy software in Windows XP!  Create a shortcut to
the program and 

right click on the icon go to properties then compatibility. You can choose
Windows 95, Windows 98/ME,

Windows NT 4.0, and Windows 2000.  The only thing that Windows XP does not
support is DOS programs.

 

Try it out and you will see for yourself.

My understanding is that Windows XP is pretty much legacy free, because it
doesn't support Windows
98 or Me.
