Its easier to safeguard your passwords LOL
Hi Cindy My quest for a solution is almost over, I hope that you have not removed the CMOS Battery, as someone on CHAD recommended? I only get daily digests from CHAD as they are lots of non-computer messages there and as I belong to about 12 computer groups, I can't read all the Emails. As I mentioned to Jim removing the battery in a thinkpad can damage it by locking both the hard drive and the supervisor's password. My quest continued here, I remember reading this message in July: Find the answer on this page. It reset a Windows XP SP2 Admin password no problem, just make sure you set it to blank and not an actual string (or it won't work). The boot CD downloaded, burned, and ran just perfectly on this laptop I was having trouble with. It works on any flavor of Windows, Windows NT, Windows 98 (SE too), Server 2000, Server 2003, etc. For any other sys admins in a similar predicament, I hope this helped! In more sys admin news, we just got in our new Dell Poweredge 1800 server. This thing is a beast. I now get to go plaer, `configure' it. The page referred to is http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/bootdisk.html and covers the bootdisk which has ths facility to reset passwords, In addition to the information given there this link provides further instructions http://www.jms1.net/nt-unlock.shtml I am, however, not completely satisfied that the boot disk will work on the thinkpad, but its worth a try if all else fails.Password decoder & scancode editor for IBM ThinkPad's eeprom dumps (Freeware) I then went on to identify this tool CmosPwd decrypts password stored in cmos used to access BIOS SETUP. The good news is that it covers IBM (PS/2, Activa, Thinkpad) http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/CmosPwd#Operating_Systems But, as i don't know whether you can carry out the actions required to get CmosPwd to run http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/CmosPwd#Operating_Systems. I continued to look for additional information that may prove useful in the course of this I found a clever person that writes software, including Password decoder & scancode editor for IBM ThinkPad's eeprom dumps (Freeware)http://home.ripway.com/2005-7/365678/ More improtantly that I found that he calls himself AllServices and he runs a forum which deals with IBM ThinkPad Unlock Supervisor Password http://www.security-forums.com/viewtopic.php?t=23102 If you go here http://www.security-forums.com/# you can register as a member and then post a message on the Forum that Allservices appears to run, providing as much information as possible. He appears very helpful and knows all about the stuff you need to do. I think, if I were you, I would have a quick look at the links that I have provided. Make a list of the information that you think you need to provide the Forum and post it here as a new topic http://www.security- forums.com/viewtopic.php?t=23102&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=176 I hope that the Forum, but mainly Allservices, will get the thinkpad working.
