I think I've solved it.

I did some backing up, then uninstalled and reinstalled again a
couple of times. Started looking again, and realized that there was
a folder named "attachment" in the old settings and not in the
freshly installed new ones. Somewhere in the past few months,
someone must have decided that was a good idea ( probably me, but who
knows?), and to set Eudora's data folder inside Eudora to
"attachment." So there was a conflict between which folder Eudora
was supposed to use for what attachments (Eudora comes with a
"embedded" folder, which is inside the data folder set up during
installation.)

Now Eudora is happy :-). All of the attachments and data are going
into the folders I had it create at set up, and I'm not messing with
that any more, especially not inside Eudora itself! :-D. So far so
good. I've picked up my mail a few times, and the error message
hasn't shown up. Aside from some attachments that don't want to copy
or move from the old folders to the new, and the time it's going to
take to copy/move everything because of that, I think it's ok.

I'll give it a few days to see before joining the other picture
groups I have been considering.

Thanks for the suggestions :-).

Theresa
