I have one solution, try to restore XP back to before you installed the new 
program.
I generally copy any downloads, esp. programs. I always download to the 
desktop in case I forget what I have downloaded, which is most of the time. 
Then I copy the download to another partition called downloads, via a 
desktop shortcut. So I have at least two copies of the download. My download 
folder has becaome a sort of safe place for all new files and programs. 
Later I organize them, they are on my D drive. Programs go in the Archive 
partition, pics and images on the Multimedia partition, etc.
