Jim,

I know you are right. I took it to a wholesale place that does repairs
for retailers. The base charge is $100 and they think they can do
everything I need done for that, plus any parts. If it needs a new vid
card or MB, neither are all that expensive (well, they CAN be, but
don't have to be.) They are going to call me when they know what the
problem is, and then I can decide to fix it or chuck it. Thing is, I
really need to wait until after Christmas to buy a new one, so if I
can baby this one along just a while longer, that would be great.

I checked the price of computers locally and I couldn't get one that I
trust for less than $600 or so. I can probably get one online cheaper.

If I should have to buy a new one, any recommendations on brand? Are
Compaq's still proprietary? We have Dell at work. I'm not real fond of
HP.

I did want a laptop, but you can't fix anything yourself on those.
Well, I can't anyway. I know you understand my need to fix the simple
things myself. ;)

Thx,
Diane
