Diane,
> I'm having a little trouble since I installed Zone Alarm.
I gave up on ZA, I could never figure out which programs SHOULD be allowed
acess to the internet. A contact from a former BBS that is now a web group,
said that only my browser and email program should have access, but when I
refused access to any other program I coudn't get on the web myself. I
finally gave up on it. Leo Laport used to recommend ZA but he and Steve
Gibson, security guru say that the don't use AV programs or software fire
alarms. Of course they are experts on security. I have a router, that keeps
the bad guys out from the outside word. And I guess my only other protection
is my clone of C. If things start seeming to go bad I just do a reverse
clone of my cloned C partition. I know that is confusing.
I set up my computer fresh from the factory rescue system, then I un-install
the junk programs and install my programs, then I run Ghost, to clone C to a
partition of the same size, set aside for the purpose. I have two of them. I
then create a text file with the file name as the date of the clone and put
that on the partition where I cloned C.
NOW if things go wrong I just clone the copy back to C. Yes, I suppose that
hackers could get to the partition where C was cloned to, but if that should
happen, I still have my factory rescue disks and my backed up data files. I
do run AV software, especially to filter my email And I have spam blockers
but I doubt that they are of much value.
I have never been aware of any hacking, virues or spyware. Yes, malware
keeps a low profile but my router keeps most of that out. So anything I say
about security is based on generally accepted wisdom since I haven't
knowingly gotten any malware except spam. And I don't get a lot of that. At
the most fifteen pieces a day. And I just don't open messages from anyone I
don't know. And I never open attachments that my known emailers do not
mention in their messages.
