Both 56% of space free or used up means that you still have more than 
44% free. I would not worry unless you have 56% free of a 5 gig drive. 
That would put you at about 3 gig free. That is not enough to build a 
DVD image (4.3 - 4.7).

Anyway, I have 45% free of my 160 gig drive (75 gig) and feel no 
pressure to get more space. How much actual free space do you have?
