Compacting is for those who insist on keeping one and every email. I switch that off. I delete the lot and set the Deleted folder to empty on shut down of the program. It you have hundreds in those folder that is what slows TB down.
If there are any you want to save then select and save them through the File Menu to a folder in your Documents folder. -------Original Message------- From: Walter Blum Date: 10/01/2008 20:02:24 To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [A-1-Computer_Tech] BackUps... Hopefully the blow-by-blow instruction will explain why my Thunderbird is so slow retrieving email. It's been suggested that I compact the folders in order to speed up retrieval, but I tried that several times (folder by folder) and it does no good. The program itself loads in a second, but retrieving e-mail can take up to five minutes. What I usually do is call up Firefox first, click on the E-mail button and then return to Firefox. While I'm checking the weather and reading my New York Times articles Thunderbird is grinding away in the background and finally comes up with my messages for the day. A nuisance but it works. However, you would think the software would be a little more efficient.
