You can click one to select it and then go Edit/Select all, then hit the delete key.
Go Tools/Options and the Maintenance tab. Put a tick in the Empty Delete file when closing. Now when you close the program your delete file is emptied. Of course you have to delete incoming mail as you read it. You can set up filters to delete unwanted mail as it comes in.
