It was spinning and it was trying to eject, but it was like the door 
was stuck and it couldn't open. Maybe the disk was sitting crooked 
or something. It was just weird. 

The second part about it disappearing, I did as you and Dragonfly 
suggested and checked the connection again. It seemed to be plugged 
in, but I unplugged and replugged it and now the drive is back 
(imagine that) and for some strange reason now the drive ejected. It 
was plugged in and working fine before and it wouldn't eject. Maybe 
something I did when I was poking and prodding loosened it up. Who 
knows. It's working fine though.
