I used to keep all my data on a separate hard drive from the operating
system, just in case of times like this when I would have to reinstall
Windows. "Used" to is the operative word here. Darn it! I wish I'd
done that this time because I don't want to lose the data that's going
to be lost if I have to reinstall Windows. :(

Yep Diane:
That is the way that you should have kept going. Now there are several
things that you can do........

1) You can do a "Windows inplace reinstallation" otherwise known as a
"Repair" reinstallation, IF you have an XP installation CD or one you can
borrow. This does not require a validation as you will not be installing XP,
Just repairing the files. If you have an OEM Recovery Setup, you can check to
see if it has a "Non-destructive" recovery option. My Toshiba and my Gateway
both have this recovery feature.

2) If you can get into the [F8] "Safe Mode" you can try the options in
there. The option least used is "Safe Mode with command prompt". This will
place you in V. DOS and from there you can do just about everything that can
be
done with XP, including viewing and copying your data and pictures. You need
to remember the first dozen DOS commands. Since you can view all your files
in DOS, you can find "Windows System Restore" by typing the full path at
the DOS prompt. Then you can do a Restore back to an earlier date, and that
often works.

3) Using an XP installation CD you can open the "Windows Recovery Console",
BEFORE XP starts installing, and that takes you into another Limited DOS
mode that is specifically geared to recovering XP.

All three steps are highly visible and recommended in the MicrosoftSupport
Web site. These steps must be taken before the drive gets messed up. Hard
drives seldom lose data, but, people often do. Hope this helps. Bye.

Emile
