The Windows install does reformat the C partition. AND you usually
have the option to format the drive. Of course your options may depend
on what the mfg. includes, there are sometimes differences between
companies. The only situation that an XP install or a factory restore
or recover can't handle is if the drive is damaged. And I never
assume that a drive is damaged unless it won't accept a system install.

Hi:
With an OEM Recovery Setup you have one or two choices. Many OEMs only give
you one choice and that is to recover the PC to it's new state. Some, like
Toshiba and Gateway, I know from experience offer the second choice of
doing a "non-destructive recovery" which does NOT do a reformat and saves
your
old OS to a Special folder. and you don't lose your Data.

With an XP Retail version you are given three choices, you might even say
four. You can do a "Windows in-place reinstallation" which does not do a
reformat, and does not harm your programs or data. Or, you can do a "Clean
installation" which does do a reformat and wipes out the previous contents of
the partition, or you can do a clean install to a partition that already
contains another installation of XP. In this case both installations will run
independently and no files or folders will be lost. I'm told you will even
have a choice to run either version. There is a not recommended warning. The
fourth option is the ability to use the "Windows Recovery console". There
are only about 4 or 5 trick to learn with that and anyone can do a recovery.

Bye
