I would forget about defragging - the drive is pretty certainly on its 
deathbed.  Scandisk "might" be able to block the bad sectors - but it's 
probably too late for that too.

You didn't mention what version of Windows?  You can run Checkdisk (XP 
and Vista)  by opening Explorer and right-clicking on the C: drive. 
Choose Properties, then Tools tab, then click "Check Now". 

To run it from the Start, Run, box type CMD.  You'll get a DOS type 
window.  Type CHKDSK C:/r  and you should get a message asking if you 
want to run checkdisk the next time the computer boots.  Choose "yes" 
and reboot.
