Decreasing!

Thank you both for all your suggestions.

I successfully got my computer back to it's usual slow self and restored all
my free space.

My free space started to go up slowly and it raised enough (1%) to perform a
full scan which told me my computer was clean, no bad stuff of any kind. I
have no idea why the free space started to increase. I also noticed that it
had no bearing when a I saved a document of one size to the amount of space
the computer used up. What ever the case after 2 full days of a scan (extra
slow because of limited space) I decided to run the cc cleaner again. I
noticed a discrepancy between how much mb it said it could delete and how
much it actually deleted. When I checked my settings I noticed it was set
to delete only files older than 48 hours. I unchecked this option and ran
it again. My computer went from 1% to 40% free space. Now I know those
files were not created in the last 48 hours as I was only deleting and had
no room to save, so I cannot explain this. Lot of my settings came back out
of whack but after a few days struggling, I have now corrected them back to
normal.

It would be good to know what caused all this but the main thing is I am
back! I am obsessively watching my space for now....

Thanks again!

Run a-squared, it plays well with others! No pain, no fear. Don't forget to
start checking your C: Drive for Folders containing Downloaded Programs. Oh
yeah, RUN A-SQUARED...

Thank you, Ivan [Lucid Geek]

Hi Ivan,

Thanks for the quick response.

CC Cleaner only gave me an extra 77mb. It was one of the programs I deleted
...thought it was slowing my computer although in retrospect it was probably
Low disk space.

A-squared I am scared to run as my Shaw secure does not play well with other
Similar programs.

Any other thoughts on what may be causing the rapid loss of free space?

Thanks.

Sounds as if you are infected, probably from using P2P software to Download.
My guess is that it is still running.. Furthermore, you could have duplicate
Copies [usually found on C: Drive] of the items that have been Downloaded.
So, you will have to find those Folders and make the decision to Remove what
You don't want. Meanwhile, run these:

A-squared Free 3.5.0.25
Publisher's Description:

Malware describes Trojan Horses, Dialer, Worms, Spyware and others.
A-squared Free is specialized in finding and removing them securely. The

For Spyware Traces and Tracking Cookies. The included Memory Scan detects
Malware immediately without the need to scan the whole harddisk to make a
Quick security check. Currently more than 440,000 different types of Malware
Can be removed. After the scan has finished you can select which Malware
Files you want to remove automatically. Free daily online updates provides

I am losing my mind and maybe my computer here!

microsoft xp home, sp3, hp computer intel pentium 4

My computer has always been somewhat slow and sluggish but recently it
got worse. The light seems to almost always be on even when I am not
using the computer.

Then I noticed that I recently had 27% free space and now I have 1% on
my c drive. I have not added anything much beyond emails and have been
relentlessly deleting and uninstalling to try and save my space.

I have done disk clean-up, defrag, and check disk. I removed extra
restore points and lowered the space of restore. I have also used pc
doctor and my hardware passed the tests.

My virus checker cannot properly run with this low free space so I
cannot do a proper scan. The online scan will also not load onto my
computer so that is not an option? I use shaw secure (made by f-secure)

I have googled the problem and find similiar questions but most of the
answers fall into the category of cleaning up my free space. I do not
believe that I used up 26% of my free space in less than 2 weeks
without adding anything much. Also with all the deleting and
uninstalling that should even out things somewhat. I don't believe the
amount of free space is accurate.

I don't know if this is relevant or not but I noticed my add remove
programs seems off. My sp3 says last time I used it is 2 years before
I installed it. Most of my dates are off. Also frequency of use is
off.

My hunches:
1)sp3 - seems things got worse after downloading this but I am not sure
if that is relevant.
2)Since I cannot do a proper scan (real time still works) could it be a
virus, worm, maleware, etc...?

I would like to find the cause of this rather than simply keep deleting
as a bandaid so if anybody has some troubleshooting tips I would be
most grateful. This group is always so wonderful and helpful!
