Ivan,
Thanks for the reply.
As often happens I managed to solve the problem before the first reply
about it.
This time I went through a passel of fix tries. I figured that some of
the items the Vista said that were installed on my XP machine had not
been uninstalled. In fact I had to rescue the XP install using Norton
Ghost. I then ran the Vista install and got a list of items that it
said should be uninstalled, including Nero and Partition Magic. So I
uninstalled them and ran Vista install again. It told me that there
were still two items that I should uninstall, this time I could not
find the items. So I went ahead and installed Vista. I must have
entered the frigging Product code five times total. :-0 The two
problems Vista said would not prevent upgrading.

Yes, I have programs like that, but recovering XP was just as
effective. But I finally had to install Vista clean rather than
upgrade because it kept failing. I suppose that the problem comes from
the fact that they don't want users to install Vista if they don't
have a version of Windows installed. They used to just ask for the
install disk during installation.
