Hope the full Sony restore works. It's best to unplug all devices (except keyboard and mouse) before you start. You want the system to only have the devices it had when you bought it. That includes to unplug any network cables if any.
That microsoft website had a simple registry fix to correct the prob caused by SP3. If you can get back to the desktop you can try it:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/953791 I don't think just installing SP3 would corrupt the MBR or harm the hard drive?
