If I understand it correctly, the code embedded in the pdf file mainly 
just exploits a vulnerability in Windows (if one exists).
So, keep your Microsoft updates current.  Foxit reader is widely used 
and they say they keep up with all the security issues found in Acrobat 
and Acrobat reader.
If I recall it was maybe 5 years ago that a virus was found in a pdf 
file, and it made huge headlines since so many people use pdf's.  Adobe 
quickly released a patch that closed the vulnerability.
If it were me, and I knew the person sending the pdf file, I would scan 
it with my AV, and then open it.
If I "didn't" know who sent it, I probably wouldn't open it.
Either way, I think your risk is pretty minimal.
