Probably some system files got damaged as the PC went into hibernation. First try System Restore: Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore. Choose a date previous to when the prob started. You won't lose any data or programs.
If that fails try running System File Checker: Go to Start, Run and type SFC /scannow You'll likely need your XP cd if it finds any damaged files.
