I would think a big company like Netgear would give users the choice of
whether or not to install any extra software. I have an adapter from a
little obscure company called Zonet(?) and it also made me install the
drivers plus their own wireless utility. I was able to just let Windows
manage my wireless, and then disable the Zonet software.
Have you tried disabling the extra Netgear stuff? Go to Start, type
MSCONFIG, and look for any Netgear stuff on the Startup tab. Un-check it
and reboot. If that doesn't work see if it's got a Service running - Go
to Start, and type ServicesMSC. If you see its service listed you can
set it to disabled. There's gotta be a way to stop it from running, but
still use the adapter.

Good luck,
Donk
