Well, you can network the computers even without a homegroup.
Try this to be sure both computers have Network Discovery enabled:
1. Click Start
2. Click Control Panel
3. type Network into the search box.
4. Click Network And Sharing Center.
5. On the left side click "Change Advanced Sharing Settings".
6. Click the little down arrow and click to "turn on Network Discovery".

Do this on both PC's.  It will allow them to see each other.  I hope.  :-)
