A lot of cell phones are locked so they can only be used with that
particular carrier ie; tmobile, at&t, verizon, sprint, etc

Unlocking it means you can use it with another carrier.  I had an AT&T
phone that I needed unlocked because I have T-Mobile for my carrier.  there
is this site www.freemyblackberry.com that will send you the code to unlock
the phone once I send him the IMEI number and the mep number which can be
found on the cell phne.  I put the code in and voila, it works.
