Intermittent probs like yours are not unusual at all.  You can stop 
worrying about a virus - a virus would never cause the beeps. The timing 
of the beeps is a code, but basically you can be sure you have a major 
hardware problem.  Could be the ram sticks.  Could also be many other 
things - a defect somewhere on the motherboard. Could be the processor. 
Could even be the hard drive.
If it were me...
First thing I would do the next time I was able to get into windows is 
quickly back up my personal data.  My Documents folder for sure. For 
Thunderbird you can copy your whole profile folder to your backup device 
- with you I imagine that folder will be pretty huge. :-)    Here's how 
to find the profile folder:

On Windows 7 & Vista Thunderbird data is stored at: C:\Users\<user 
name>\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\
On Windows XP Thunderbird data is stored at: C:\Documents and 
Settings\<user name>\Application Data\Thunderbird\
If it turns out to be that your hard drive is defective you want to get 
your stuff copied from it now!

Second thing I would do is run a check of your hard drive.
Right-click start button and choose "Computer".
Right-click the C: drive and choose "Properties".
Click the Tools tab and click "Check Now".  Put a check in both boxes 
and click OK or Start.
You might be told it can't be checked until a reboot - if so just say ok 
and reboot.  The scan will auto-start.
It could take quite a while - maybe up to 2 hours.  You'll eventually 
see a report saying "no errors were found"  (we hope, haha).
I should warn you that often, if a drive is failing, running a check 
disk will be the final nail in its coffin.  That's why you should backup 
FIRST.

To sum up:  It's almost certainly a hardware prob (not a virus or 
software program).  If it's the hard drive you can buy a new one for 
less than $100, reinstall windows, restore your backups and programs, 
and be 100% fine.  But if it's another piece of hardware, and you can't 
figure out which, a new pc is likely in your near future.
If you get a new PC, and your old hard drive is healthy, it's not 
difficult to "clone" your old drive onto the new one.  The new one will 
come with software to do just that.
