You haven't really done anything that would possibly cause your speakers
(or sound chip) to break. So I would still think it's just a setting
somewhere.
PC makers usually put their own 3rd party sound drivers on new systems.
So, I would check to see if there's another set of volume or mute
options - other than XP's own settings. Look in Control Panel for a
category other than XP's "Sound and Audio Devices" category. I have a
Dell that shows a category called SigmaTel Audio. Yours may be called
something different. You can look under Start, Programs too. Or even
"Add Remove Programs in Control Panel". Your manual would likely tell
you if there's 3rd party audio drivers installed.

Anyway, it wouldn't be unheard of for a separate setting to mute the
speakers and/or the ear bud jack. There are situations where you want
to be listening to both the speakers and the buds at the same time.
Poke around. :-)

Donk
Also - you can uninstall Windows updates in "Add/Remove Programs". In
case you think it was a Windows update that broke the sound.
