I have built a research machine with the following setup. It was built for remote developers to run tests on it. It also has a USRP2 setup on it with DBSRX addon. Its purpose was to reduce the cost of people who want to work on this project and be able to test their work on this setup and ultimately improving the whole. Up to now only 3 developers are using the machine and they are working on the performance boost.
1x OS primary disk (specs not important) 4x Samsung F3 SATA spinpoint 1TB each (with 500GB of tables on each) 7200rpm 16MB Cache (cache is irrelevant to what we are doing, correct me if i am wrong) 1x 5770 ATI GPU from XFX 1x AMD Phenom XII (with 3rd core enabled with motherboard hack, my 4th core was not stable) over clocked from 3.2 to 3.7Ghz 2x 2GB OCZ performance ram (gold edition) 1x Asrock MB 880G The drives are hooked up via SATA under AHCI setup in the bios in order to be able to get full NCQ support. (and not to have a shared SATA controller which reduces performance) With this setup we can crack the key in 35seconds using 4 Hard disks. This time is not good enough. Essentially increasing the Hard disks will make it faster, and moving away from magnetic media and moving to flash SSD type disks will be better but the cost is outrageous.. 1 x 500GB SSD drive is around 1300 euro so if we need 4 you can see that its out of reach as far as cost is concerned. Anyone have good contacts with SSD manufacturers or suppliers?
