The point isn't that commercial software is evil; it's that there is
such a thing as a standard that it's safe to write to, and as far as I 
know etf isn't such a thing.  My guess is that the definition of valid 
etf is "what works in finale".

No, not like html 3.0.  There will be an html 4.0, which will be
different, but if I say this is html 3.0, an html 3.0 parser is going
to know what to do with it.  And I can write an html 3.0 parser from
publicly available documents, without buying a particular commercial
product, or booting a particular OS.

Sure.  But that's not going to get anyone an etf converter.  I'm
already working on abc2ly, and thinking about working on abc2mtex.
Someone who has a copy of finale installed on an os they can stand
booting is going to have to do the etf stuff.
