Sigh...
Too bad we can't get consistent, or even comprehensible behavior here.
- iCab works fine, displaying both <iframe> and <object> properly. It also
handles DOS, unix, and Mac ibreaks correctly. However, things disappear on
reload and can't be copied to the clipboard.
- Netscape 4 on Mac fails for all alternatives.
- Netscape 4.7 on linux doesn't work for any of them, either.
- Explorer 4.5 on the Mac works with iframe but not with any of the object
alternatives. Copying to clipboard from iframe does work.
- Explorer 5 with Windows 98 is closest to being right. It displays
everything (except when <object> itself specifies text/vnd.abc). Copying to
the clipboard works. However, both DOS and Mac linebreaks are messed up
when <object type="text/plain"> is used (unix is ok, oddly).
Of course, some of this may be related to the interaction of the server
(Webstar, in this case, serving .abc as type "text/vnd.abc") and the
various browsers.
As I said before, I'm afraid that we really have to blame browser
programmers for this state of affairs. Using <object type="text/plain"> is
the obvious way to put in a plaintext object. The display of text/plain
must be among the simpler problems that browser programmers face; the fact
that they can't do it suggests lack of attention.

BTW. If you have a Mac, look at iCab. It's a fine program.
