Maybe I'm missing the point of this discussion, but it seems to
me that what an abc display program ought to do with accidentals
is to reproduce EXACTLY what the transcriber put into the abc.
If I put in an accidental where none is required it's because I
want it displayed there, and if I put it in parentheses it's
because I want it to display that way. The last thing I want is
a program which messes around with the music behind my back, and
forces me to go looking for an obscure command line switch or
preferences setting in order to get what I want. If I receive
an abc which doesn't display as I want it I'll edit it until
it does so.
There is certainly some scope for discussion as to what player
programs should do with accidentals, but I'm firmly of the
opinion that display programs should just do what the abc tells
them to do.
