Yes, I talked in my last email about Don Herbison-Evans' software
to handle Labanotation system, and create movies of people dancing
from a Labanoation coding. You should have a look to it if you
plan to start a similar project, even if it's not based on the
Labanotation.

Do you know the Feuillet notation ? It's from the 18th century and
it was made for the ballets of this period.
You can find the original manuscripts with how it works at
http://memory.loc.gov/ , try http://memory.loc.gov/musdi/073/ for
example, or search in the database for more manuscripts)

So you plan to create a new notation ? Will it be a descriptive
one ? I've seen that Steve Allen (
http://www.ucolick.org/~sla/morris/music/wwwdance.html ) made
something to notate the Morris dances with Abc, in fact it is a
simple description under the notes, but it's not enought for more
complex dances I guess. If a description can give informations
about the steps (left foot / right / jump...), it's maybe limited
for how the arms must be, how the dancers are placed etc. For
example in France we have a folk dance called "Grandes poteries"
which is a basic bourre-step, but we have to "walk" in a
triangular pattern, come back, and then end with a
"diamond-shape", by making a sort of Waltz step, whirling on
ourselves. It's rather easy to understand with a drawing, but I
don't know how it could be written with a descriptive notation.
But I'm really looking for this sort of notation because to use a
"code" instead of a drawing allow to send informations easier via
email, or to use it for programming purposes.

There is certainly basic steps that could be coded at first. Are
other people in this list interested in that also ? Is there a
need for a new mailing-list dedicated to that ?
