You could put a numbered V: field at the start of each line to fool the program into thinking each line is a separate voice. You would have to turn off the brackets at the left and the long bars between voices (not sure how to do that in abcm2ps, but I think it can be done). You'd still have trouble if the tune had an anacrusis though. Most books on music notation advise against aligning bars on successive lines of music, since it makes it harder for the player to keep the place when sight-reading.
