You can enable macros separately for display or for playing.  As Tom
said, you normally enable them for playing and disable them for display
or printing, unless perhaps you want to make a specific point about
the ornamentation and display them in full.  You can also do a pure
text expansion, i.e. generate a new abc tune with the macros written
out in full.  This can be useful for debugging macros, or if you want
to send a tune complete with ornaments to somebody who uses a program
which doesn't understand macros.
