Then I'm confused. I just had a look at http://abcplus.sourceforge.net/abc2-draft.html and a search for "line break" finds "I cannot decide whether `!' should be included in ABC. Before it is, it should be accepted by more applications - and users." The only reference to "*" is as a blank syllable, in lyrics.
