Who wrote that, why and after what discussion?  (That is not
what the abc2mtex * means).

For me it would be a pain in the arse.

If you want to use * for anything, use it for the bracketed
things (which I won't write anyway so I don't care how ugly
they are).

Deprecate !<text>! instead.
