Actually, 2.95.2 is the latest stable GCC release.  2.96 is a development
release and is not backwards or forwards compatible, but RedHat shipped it -
see http://gcc.gnu.org/gcc-2.96.html for more details.  Other applications
are often providing RH7 releases (compiled with '2.96') and 'other Linux'
releases (compiled with 2.95.2) seperately.  We should probably do the same.
