I have a number of large documents originally written in Word (books,
actually) which I want to use AbiWord to update and reformat in order to
print updated versions. However, AbiWord becomes very confused when I try
to open them. One example is a recipe book with some hundred or so pages,
the title page being formatted in a font of 72 points or so.
After import into AbiWord, this becomes a document of 912 pages, with all
the pages rendered on top of each other and the entire text apparently
rendered in 72-point something (although the format bar resolutely insists
it is 12-point Times New Roman), making it impossible to edit because you
can't see what you're editing. (Additionally, CPU usage goes to 100% and
AbiWord's memory utilization jumps almost immediately to around 96Mb, and
they *stay* there until AbiWord is killed. If the window is resized even
slightly, it takes AbiWord ten to fifteen minutes to finish redrawing its
window.)
I can't determine with certainty whether the problem is due to the
formatting of the original document, or whether AbiWord simply has
problems with importing a document having that many pages. The document
itself is about 95k in size.
In cases like this, it would be extremely useful to have the ability to
tell AbiWord to import a document as unformatted text, discarding all
fonts, margins, rulers, etc. and rendering the entire document in the
default font at 12 points. How hard would this be to do?
A suggestion, too, related to the last: How difficult would it be to add
a preference to set the default font face and size for new documents?
Times Roman is a hideously ugly and graceless font, almost as bad as
Courier. I understand it was principally designed to cram as many serif
characters as possible into a given space while retaining some semblance
of readability. The first thing I typically do when opening any new
document is "select all" and set the font to something pleasing to the
eye, such as CG Omega, and AbiWord *still* tries to revert to Times New
Roman from time to time. It seems to me I shouldn't have to put up with
this -- I should be able to just tell AbiWord that in all cases, I want it
to default to CG Omega unless I select otherwise.
