I'll leave it Dom to deal with the MS Word import issues.
Regarding the default font, Dom is also dealing with this through the use
of templates. Define a template with your new default font and start your
new doc's from the template. You can also use the template to define a set
of useful styles which would include things like
fonts/colours/language/margins/headings etc etc.
This will be in the next release.
