By default, a few gcc extensions are allowed. Those that conflict with the standards can be turned off with the -ansi flag. As of gcc 3.0, which is currently in beta, calling strlen without including <string.h> gives an "implicit declaration" warning (unless you use -Werror, in which case it is an error). IMHO this is the correct behavior.
