glib has such a function, and we already have some functions from glib
in our own subset.
See g_basename in http://cvs.gnome.org/lxr/source/glib/gutils.c
This would be useful for the PalmDoc exporter too, which is why I know
this function exists. I gave up working on this a few months back
since it looked like more and more of glib stuff would have to be
copied across for this function.
