There a several reasons to use normal mode:

* More screen space (no columns, margins or fixed-with word-wrap)
* It's faster (this was an issue with older versions Word and
               older machines)
* The presentation/WYSIWYG isn't getting in the way of the content

For an example, see my Word 97 document at
<URL: http://home.no.net/huftis/kritikk/abiword/normal.doc >. This
document may not display properly if you don't have all the
fonts it uses. In normal mode, it looks like:

<URL: http://home.no.net/huftis/kritikk/abiword/normal.png >

In page view/layout mode, it looks like:

<URL: http://home.no.net/huftis/kritikk/abiword/page.png >

As you can see, basic text formatting is displayed in normal mode,
but distracting advanced features (like columns and positioning)
isn't.
