Most fonts[1] contain PANOSE[2][3] information. If this
information is embedded in documents (they don't take up much
space -- only 8 digits for each fonts), they can be used to make
*intelligent* font substitutions[4].

In addition, a simple look-up table for most common fonts (Times
New Roman --> Times, Arial --> Helvetica) could be built-in
AbiWord.
