Just to add:
The thing to do is to edit your AbiWord profile and add the
following settings inside <Scheme name="_custom_"
DocumentLocale="en-US"
MenuLabelSet="en-US"
StringSet="en-US"
ToolbarLabelSet="en-US"
However, I think this method gives rise to a bug in language selection.
