Same for me. Granted, I am a law student, so my essays fo not have to include complex chemical or mathematical formulas. Still, I have tried Lyx and I too did not like it. In fact, I only use AbiWord to type raw LaTeX. I then save the file as plain text and then run it through 'latex' or 'pdflatex' depending on the situation.
