It sounds like your environment is set to en-US. Try adding the following lines to your ~/.bash_profile (assuming you use bash):
LANG=en_GB export LANG That should reset the environment to en-GB, and Abi should notice automatically. If that doesn't work, you need to edit AbiWord.Profile. Go through the builtin scheme (the first one listed) and copy all the lines including en-US into the scheme labelled custom. Then change all the US to GB. This will also change your menus and dialogues so that they are spelled correctly.
