I've not really been following this thread, so I'm not sure what the platform is (it's not specified in this mail). However. I've had problems with on-board RealTek audio under WindowsXP - not tried any other platforms on this machine - which were solved by putting a cheap-and-cheerful old audio card in the machine and diabling the on- board audio - Soundblaster I think but I don't have the machine to hand.
