I'm somewhat curious as to the use case where you have a valid number
for the position in the group and a valid number for the size of the
group, and the position is the thing which is unknown.

Regardless, this:

I fully agree with. But are you suggesting this is a documentation issue
(i.e. we need to make darned sure implementors use it correctly), or an
API issue (ATs have a need to be able to ask what specific thing is
unknown.)?
