The 2001 sensus puts this figure at little above 20 million. NSSO survey puts the fugure of persons with blind at 2.8 million against the figure of 10 million projected by the sensus.
The NSSO survey is the one being followed by the government for resource allocation and planning purposes. There are quite a few publications that put all these figures together. A book was released by Ministry of social justice and empowerment which had an article as notes of presentation made by Ms. Rajvant Sandhu (Jt Secretary MSJ&E which highlighted only on these issues and presentated many tables giving rural urban figures and male female figures on various parametres like these.
