Child with one eye born in TN hospital
Chennai, Aug 4. (UNI): The Kasturba Gandhi Hospital
here witnessed the spectacle of a baby girl born with
one eye, the result of a rare congenital disorder
called cyclopia, which occurs in one in a million
cases.
A chromosomal disorder, cyclopia occurs due to the
failure of the embryonic forebrain to subdivide
properly. This hampers the proper development of the
eyes, according to hospital sources.
The baby was born to a couple who had remained
childless for nearly six years.
Experts said the condition could result if the woman
was a diabetic before conception and the sugar levels
were not maintained properly.
