Gartner: EU Pressure May Cause Windows Vista Delay

Rather than late 2006, Gartner strongly expects Microsoft to ship Windows
Vista in Q2 2007. The analyst firm says the vendor's

conflict with the European Commission

over features in the operating system,

especially built-in security,

could cause a significant delay in a couple ways.

Either the EC will actually bar the release of Vista in the European Union
for anti-trust issues, or Microsoft will use its ongoing battle with the EC
as

an

excuse

to delay the operating system further.

Gartner says a

partial delay is a real possibility.

Perhaps volume licensing customers will get their copies so that they can
begin testing, while consumers and OEMs wait.

We think, though, that would cause more problems that it would solve, and in
the end probably not put more dollars in Microsoft's coffers. Manufacturers

and retailers, after all, are already

peeved with repeated delays

and the likelihood that they'll miss another holiday season opportunity to
capitalize on Vista. And in the long term, what would a show of weakness
like

that in the face of pressure from a non-U.S. governmental body do for
Microsoft's position? Not much.

Volume licensing customers are advised by Gartner to verify that their
current support contracts will remain in effect in the event of another
Vista delay.
