Well George, was thinking to write on this weekend, so here comes what I feel is important.
We have lots of in-house libraries in various organizations all around India, and they are doing good job of providing reading material as per resources available to them. But whenever I think of reading a title, it's hard for me to contact all the libraries and find if they have it. It will help if there is a dedicated organization with reach all over India, having connections with various libraries all over the world, and a single reference point for all types of books in various formats. The library should have a website for the online catalog, and the catalog may be provided in other formats based on demand. such a library should have titles for various subjects covering broad spectrum like school books, college books, professional books, and other books which are for general reading. Also it is important that such a library caters for broad spectrum of Indian languages. following formats may be considered for the distribution of books, but we should not be restricted to them as we never know what future has in store for us. 1. Braille books: Even though we can now read e-text and audio books, still reading Braille has totally different experience. Another aspect of Braille books is that they are still used by lots of people as their only medium. 2. Audio books: These books can be provided in various formats such as A. cassettes and CDs: as usual books may be distributed all over India in both cassettes and CDs. B. downloadable Daisy: like bookshare, but in audio so as to avoid legal problems, or may be some work can also be done to make amendments in copyright act. I am not sure whether it is allowed to distribute books in Daisy audio, but if there is an organization like NIVH solely for this purpose, they can take this forward with more legitimacy. D. Online reading via streaming: although such a technology is still not used widely, but soon we will be able to read such books due to high speed wireless networks. we might be able to read any book, anytime on our Mobile phones or other devices having capabilities of high speed wireless internet. 3. E-Text: We do have digital rights management technology which restricts illegal copying and so such an organization can also provide books in E-Text, and again, daisy can help us as well. Like me many people on AI would have seen publications in E-Text with rights of authors protected.
