and why not install NVDA as a back up screen reader? I use NVDA for login screen as my JAWS17 is not speaking in my login screen but of course it does after login into my laptop running win8.1. NVDA will help you in this. as soon as you are on the desktop window, just quit NVDA and switch on your JAWS without any further assistance from sighted persons. Hope it helps.
